The College of New Jersey is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the campus community.
In 2008, the Involuntary Health or Safety Withdrawal Policy established the Behavioral Assessment and Response Team (BART). Convened and chaired by the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students or his/her designee, BART is an interdisciplinary team composed of professionals representing various areas on campus, working together to detect and intervene with students of concern with the goal of decreasing the likelihood of personal and community crisis situations.
The team includes representatives from Academic Affairs, Campus Police, Counseling and Psychological Services, Differing Abilities Services, Residential Education and Housing, Student Conduct, and Student Health Services. BART assists in evaluating whether the student meets the criteria for involuntary health or safety withdrawal and makes recommendations to the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) for further action in response to the student’s behavior.
The criteria for involuntary health or safety withdrawal of a student are met if there is a substantial risk of either of the following:
a. Significant harm to the health or safety of the student or others (“Harm”); or
b. Unreasonable impediment to lawful educational process or activity for apparent medical or mental health reason of the student (“Impediment”).
BART meets bi-weekly during the academic year, and may meet at other times as needed at the request of the AVP/DOS. Any team member may contact the AVP/DOS to request that BART be convened in addition to the regular schedule.
